ModernEyes Theatre Company launched its inaugural production in 2004 with a tour of The Turn Of The Screw (by Henry James, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher). First directed by Stageworks in Tampa and having been voted as Best of 2003 by The Tampa Tribune in Florida, it was the perfect production for ModernEyes to reshape and tour with. The Turn of the Screw embodied the fundamental outlines of ModernEyes in that it was originally written by an American, but set in an English Victorian House in Essex. Performed with a simple set and just two actors (an American and a Brit!), a ghost story, a psychological drama with sinister undertones The Turn Of The Screw turned out to be a huge success both in England and the States. "For capturing the multi-layered horror of James' original, this is a superb production." "Linda Slade ...Eric Davies...these remarkable performers...keep things brooding while somehow allowing humour to flash throughout....
Creepy, funny, suspenseful and psychological, this is as perfect an adaptation as you will encounter." "Linda Slade... and Eric Davis...present the sense of terror so convincingly that I felt the hair on the back of my neck prickle." "Henry James' classic tale has never appeared so blood-curdlingly scary... the storytelling talent of both Linda Slade and
Eric Davis makes it all the more horrifying." "Theatre that engaged and provoked....Linda Slade and Eric Davis made Henry James' classic tale just about as frightening as
live theatre gets. The two actors give you a vast and complicated landscape of the mind. Henry James would have appreciated it." ‘Slade brings us the governess as a creature of flesh and blood, to be admired, pitied or despised, but never to be discounted.
This is wonderful, multi dimensional acting...Hatcher has four of the drama's five roles played by a single actor. In this case
Eric Davis....in every way equal to the task...a really splendid artistry."
