The Happening Crawl was part of the second annual ART IN ODD PLACES (AiOP) festival — an independent art exhibition that presents visual art, installations, and performances in unexpected public places. Taking place from September 4-October 1, 2006, AiOP provides an opportunity to explore and examine the role of public space plays in our society. Using a map, the audience roams the Lower East Side of Manhattan discovering art in places throughout the community. The Happening Crawl was our unique entry into the festival, and the first exploration of our Happening project in an outdoor setting. A roaming improvisational performance - taking its immediate surroundings as inspiration - the audience, who consisted of innocent passers-by and festival followers with maps in hand, began at “the cube” in Astor place (where performers sold lemonade to bail someone out of jail), then a street corner (where an orthodox cowboy and a blind man fought over money) and finally to a park at 1st Street and 1st Avenue (where tourists and locals alike were treated to a dance fitness class gone awry). Sometimes entertaining, sometimes confusing, always bizarre, this was The Project’s successful debut on the city streets.
